The Celtic League has welcomed (see below) the opening of a new Office of Gaelic Affairs in Nova Scotia. The question of strengthening links with the Celtic diaspora, including the community in Nova Scotia, was discussed at the recent League AGM.

It is hoped that a League representative will be able to visit the Office to further cement links at some time in the near future.

"Dear Lewis MacKinnon, CEO

Fosgladh Oifigeil Oifis Iomairtean na Gàidhlig - Official Opening of the Office of Gaelic Affairs

On behalf of the Celtic League it gives me great pleasure to offer you our fraternal greetings and support on the occasion of the opening of a new Oifis Lomairtean na Gàidhlig/Office of Gaelic Affairs in Nova Scotia.

We have followed the progress of the Gaelic language in Nova Scotia over the last few years with mounting interest. We believe that with the creation of the first permanent Chief Executive Officer position this year and the opening of the Oifis, the future of the Gaelic language and culture in Nova Scotia looks bright.

We welcome the ambition, vision and dynamism of the Government of Nova Scotia that has resulted in these recent developments and in their acknowledgment of the important role the Gaelic culture and language has played in the history of the province. We hope to build stronger contacts with the Gaelic language and culture movement in Nova Scotia in the years to come and this was one of the reasons why the following resolution was passed unanimously at our AGM last month in Caerdydd/Cardiff, Cymru/Wales:

For the Celtic League to build on its links, develop cooperation and establish new contacts with other organisations and groups internationally that work to promote the Celtic languages, culture and identity of the Celtic people e.g. Office of Gaelic Affairs in Nova Scotia.

The Celtic League has Branches in the six Celtic countries, including England, the United States and an International Branch and, for a time, we also had a Branch in Cape Breton. We would be interested to hear from people who are keen to re-organise a Branch of the League in Nova Scotia or to maintain regular contact with the intention of developing future links.

It is with regret that we were unable to send a representative from the League to be with you today, but we look forward to visiting the Office at some time soon.

Yours sincerely

Rhisiart Tal-e-bot General Secretary"
