Talks are back on the agenda once again between Fianna Fáil and the Greens after coalition negotiations broke down last Friday.

In an article in the Irish Independent today the Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern stated:

"For now, further discussion would be required for the two parties to reach a position where they could be both assured that the mix of their policies would be politically sustainable, economically feasible and in the national interest."

The six day coalition negotiations between Fianna Fáil and the Greens that took place last week, ended in frustration on Friday, as the Fianna Fáil negotiators turned to their old allies the Progressive Democrats. However, it now seems likely that Mr Ahern will make direct contact with Green Party leader, Trevor Sargent, to see if an agreement can finally be reached. A coalition Government that includes the Greens could prove positive for several League campaigns.

It was rumoured last week that negotiations encountered some stumbling blocks, including the M3 motorway plan that will run near the Hill of Tara and the continued use of Shannon airport by the US military. Both campaigns have been taken up by the League in past months and it is hoped that if the Greens come to power, possible solutions to these issues could be achieved. Meanwhile, the message to the Green Party from the Shell to Sea campaign group, another campaign that the League has supported, is to 'remember it's commitment on environment, resources and rights'.

Speaking last week before the talks broke down, Dan Boyle, one of the Green negotiators, said:

"There is some progress on all of the issues. The question is whether there has been enough."

Members of Fianna Fáil also indicated that good progress had been made in the negotiations and that further progress was possible.

The Celtic League will await the outcome of the talks with interest and looks forward to a 30th Dáil that puts environmental issues to the fore.
