The Celtic League have expressed concern to the UK DCMS about reports that funding to Welsh language TV channel S4C may be cut.

Welsh language groups have already pledged non-violent direct action if any cuts go ahead (see link below).

Dear Minister,

I write to express concern at reports that as part of the UK government spending review funding to the Welsh language channel S4C may be cut.

I note the comment from a spokesperson for your Department that: «No decisions about departmental cuts have been finalised and while we welcome input from interested parties we are not commenting on speculation ahead of the Comprehensive Spending Review in October.»

I feel sure that the General Secretary of the Celtic League will be in touch you're your Department to provide an `input'.

Whilst appreciating that the United Kingdom government faces tough decisions on spending I feel sure you will agree that fundamental criteria underlying any decision on cuts should be proportionality and fairness. An attack on the funding of S4C would meet none of these criteria.

Yours sincerely,
