Speakers Lined up for 2015 Illiam Dhone

NEWS FROM THE CELTIC LEAGUE The line up of speakers for the National Illiam Dhone Commemoration was finalised at a meeting of Mec Vannin on 27th November. This year?s speakers are: Cesar Joughin ? Manx Oration Alistair Kneale ? English Oration Cesar is the son of well known Manx musicians Greg and Hilary Joughin and Alistair Kneale organises and supplies contributions to the web-site TRANS-CELTIC. The Illiam Dhone ceremony was first organised by Mec Vannin in 1963 and after a number of years when no commemorations were held was reinstated as an initiative of Mec Vannin and the Manx branch of the Celtic League in 1979. Since 1979 it has been held continuously on an annual basis. The event is an important catalyst for the expression of contemporary views on Manx political, cultural and social issues and speeches on occasion have proved controversial. The ceremony takes place at Hango Hill, the site at which Manx Martyr Illiam Dhone was executed, on the date of his execution January 2nd. Proceedings commence at 2pm and the speeches and the wreath laying a social event` are held in Castletown. A church service is also held at Malew Church were Illiam Dhone is buried on the same day starting at 3pm.
