Dear Ambassador Samaan,

I write to express our concern at the detention, trial and ill-treatment by your government of 20 doctors, nurses and other medical personnel who provided treatment to civilians injured during protests in your country earlier this year.

The ordeal which the authorities in Bahrain have subjected these personnel to clearly is in breach of the Geneva Conventions, customary international law, and various provisions of International human rights treaties, including the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.

Global events in recent years have shown that the International community will ultimately hold to account those who commit humanitarian breaches or act in a barbaric manner towards elements within their domestic society.

We trust and believe that the administration in Bahrain will also eventually be held to account.

Yours sincerely

J B Moffatt (Mr)
Director of Information
