KERNOW: HONORARY ROLE FOR LONG SERVING LEAGUE MEMBER

A long term member of the Celtic League has been elected Honorary President of the Kernow Branch during a successful branch meeting yesterday (27 July 2011).

Harvey Lander, who joined the League in 1966 while on a trip to Dublin, Ireland to commemorate the anniversary of the Easter Rising in 1916, was the Kernow branch convenor throughout the 1970's.

Latterly Mr Lander was briefly elected to the post of Branch Convenor again last year and only stepped down recently. The League's general secretary (GS) Rhisiart Tal-e-bot proposed Mr Lander for the position, which is not a generally common role within the organisation, but as he pointed out the creation of this role is at the discretion of individual branches. The GS said at the meeting:

Harvey is a committed nationalist and Celticist and the longest running member of the branch. During the 50th anniversary of the League it is only fitting that the branch invites its most senior member to take up this honorary role, which is the first time that the position has been offered in the branch.

Accepting the invitation, Mr Lander was unanimously elected as the Kernow Branch Honorary President, saying that as the Vice President of the Cornish branch of the Celtic Congress already, it was not his intention of becoming a collector of honorary titles.
