News from Celtic League

The General Secretary (GS) has written to the French authorities ahead of a planned demonstration in Nantes this Saturday (28th June 2014) in support of Breton reunification.

The demonstration has been planned in an attempt to influence the French government to reconsider its position regarding Breton reunification at a time when the territorial reform of the French state is being seriously discussed. With the slogan ?Oui à la démocratie ! non à la disparition de la Bretagne ! pour une région  cohérente, égalitaire et solidaire? (Yes to democracy! No to the partition of Brittany! For a coherent region, equal and inclusive) the organisers of the demonstration will be looking for a mass turnout of people to show their support for Breton reunification.

The GS will be urging Celtic League branches over the weekend to write to the French authorities to join in the call for Breton reunification. The letter from the GS is set out in full below.

Dear Minister Marylise Lebranchu

Reunification of Brittany (Breizh)

I am writing to you to express the support our organisation has for those who are working, through peaceful means, for the reunification of historic Brittany.

It is our view in the Celtic countries that the rightful place for the Loire-Atlantique department is as a part of Brittany, as it has been historically. In terms of identity, culture and heritage the Loire-Atlantique department is Breton and to continue with its partition, whether it is with the Pays-de-la-Loire region or part of an artificial region, is not acceptable for us, because it represents a deliberate attempt to weaken the distinct historic territory of Brittany, as was the case when it was first created under the fascist Vichy French regime.

Currently with territorial reform being discussed, the French government have an opportunity to show the world that democratic freedom is a right that is respected in French constitutional law. It is our view that the missing territory should be rejoined with the rest of Brittany without delay or a referendum held to ask the people of Loire-Atlantique what they want.

The reunification debate should not and will not go away, because annexation of the historic Breton territory represents a stain on the French political system that needs to be held up for the injustice that it is.

Yours sincerely
