Branch Secretary Involved in Mock Fight!

The Cymru Branch Secretary and the Cambria Brand that he leads were involved in a mock flight at the town of Yr Hob (Hope) in North East Wales on 24th February 2013.

Cymdeithas Owain Glyndwr/Owain Glyndwr Society had organised the event to remember the 610th anniversary of the liberation of the town by Owain Glyndwr, Prince of Wales, from the forces of King Henry IV of England. The day also marked the unveiling of a plaque near the White Lion pub in the town by the Society on the site where the battle took place. Local historian David Healey unveiled the plaque and afterwards historian Steve Griffiths told the story of the liberation. Medieval costumes were worn by participants and spectators at the event and afterwards the group marched to nearby Caergwrle Castle following the Cambria Band drummers.

The plaque reads «On February 22nd 1403, forces loyal to Owain Glyndwr, the reigning Prince of Wales, attacked and burned this town, thus liberating it from the forces of Henry IV.»

Owain Glynd?r was the last native Welshman to hold the title Prince of Wales (Tywysog Cymru). He instigated a fierce and long running, but ultimately unsuccessful revolt against the English rule of Wales. Owain Glyndwr's name has become a symbol of pride and freedom to the people of Wales.

Cymru Branch Secretary, Adam Phillips said:

?This year saw locals take control of the event fully as they organised the parade and the production and unveiling of a plaque to commemorate the liberation of the town by the forces of Owain Glyndwr in 1403. The important thing about Hope is that it has taken a few years of dogged determination by a few volunteers to stamp this event into the psyche of the people and the area and now it is an established and anticipated event every February.

?The exact events of the time are subjective to history and historians like always, but this event serves to remind everybody in the town that the people will remember their True Prince and will march for Glyndwr!?
