NEWS FROM THE CELTIC LEAGUE The Irish Postal Service, An Post, has unveiled a new 68c stamp to celebrate the 150 anniversary of the birth of W.B. Yeats. Yeats was undoubtedly a world class literary giant and one of the foremost writers and poets of the 20th Century. In 1923 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature. The launch of the new stamp, which was accompanied by a first day cover with lines from one of his poems, took place in Sligo. Although born in Dublin, Yeats' mother was from Sligo and he spent much of his life there and although originally buried in France, where he died in 1939, his body was exhumed and reinterred at Drumcliff Churchyard just outside Sligo Town in 1948. The stamp image is an iconic photograph of the writer which hangs in the UK National Portrait Gallery.
