There is more disturbing evidence of the deep seated impact of radioactive pollution from Sellafield with the news that 69 radioactively contaminated pebbles and particles have been recovered from the Solway coast as part of a ongoing monitoring programme.

Dumfries and Galloway Council, Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA), NHS Dumfries and Galloway and the Food Standards Agency issued a joint statement saying that the risk to the public is low. However it is clear that they are now monitoring beaches along the Solway Coast in a bid to determine contamination levels after radioactive particles were detected on the north Cumbrian coast

Though Sellafield is almost certainly the cause of the pollution there have also in the past been suggestions that contamination was also released from the now defunct nuclear power plant at Chapelcross in south west Scotland.

Contaminated particle finds of this type are a common occurrence further north in Scotland at Dounreay where a major clean up is under way.
