Former Welsh Nationalist leader, Dafydd Wigley, has launched a forceful attack on the Welsh Labour Party saying that the Party is "policy-light" and is engaging in a "negative attack-laden campaign [which] shows signs of a party convulsing in the death throws of a slow and lingering end."

Speaking as Plaid Cymru launched its Assembly election campaign the highly respected politician said confidence within Plaid has "not been so high" since 1999, the party's high point in Assembly polls.

He also said that people "need and expect, Plaid to stand up for them now" and went on "We reflect the needs of the people of Wales, and will not pander to those in London who think they know best. Wales is ready for Plaid, and Plaid is ready to work for Wales - to make a difference."

Mr. Wigley, who is hoping to return to the Assembly as an AM for North Wales in the May poll, avoided personal attacks on his rivals in the Labour Party and concentrated on Labour's disastrous record in Wales.

At the present time support for both the Scottish and Welsh Nationalist Parties is very high ahead of the Scottish Parliamentary and Welsh Assembly elections and this is reflected in an increasingly negative campaign by the Labour Party in both countries.

The Celtic League predict a 'dirty tricks campaign' by Labour as the level of Nationalist popularity increases and strengthens their lead in the polls.
