A silly law which outlawed the right of Cornishmen to fly their National Flag (The Cross of St. Piran) has been overturned by Whitehall.

There was a major outcry in Kernow last year when it emerged that you could be prosecuted, fined and even imprisoned in Cornwall forflying your National Flag. A wide range of individuals and organisations expressed their opposition and the Kernow Branch of the Celtic League were in the thick of the fight to fly the flag.

Michael Chappel, Celtic League Kernow Branch Chairman kept his flag flying and invited prosecution. He also brought detail of the absurd legislation to the Celtic League (2006) Annual General Meeting which adopted a resolution calling for the law to be revoked.

Last week the British government 'caved in' and ended the absurdity.

A Department for Communities and Local Government spokesman said: "Many people want to show support for their county and uphold local traditions through the display of flags, like the flag of St. Piran. That is why we have changed the out-of-date and overly bureaucratic regulations so people can display flags without fear of prosecution."
