The Gwen ha Du on our licence plates
Bulat-Pestivien et Languidic 14/10/06 16:29 by Oui au breton Members of the Breton Regional Council decided that the Gwenn ha du would be the symbol of Brittany on the new licence plates, during a meeting on October 13th.
It was decided that the Gwenn ha du is a recognised symbol of Brittany (both inside and outside of Brittany), and therefore a positive marker of Breton identity.
Its very name (Gwenn ha du means black and white) is testament to the fact that some concepts cannot be expressed in any other language but Breton. How is it possible to find a better justification for the necessity of Breton/French bilingualism?
Hep Brezhoneg, Breizh ebet ! Without Breton, no Brittany! Without an education in Breton, no Breton!
For more than a month now, parents from Bulat-Pestivien (22) et de Languidic (56) have asked that bilingual classes be created/set up in the schools of their children (see our previous news item on this website).
It is necessary to remind people that parity in hours of bilingual education is a right stated in the National Education Code. WE DEMAND THAT THIS RIGHT BE RESPECTED.
In December 2004, members of the Breton Regional Council voted in favour of a plan to protect and maintain the Breton language. This plan gave a pledge to increase by two the number of students in bilingual classes by 2010.
Because we want this plan to be successful,
- We invite Senators, Deputies, regional and departmental councillors, community councillors, whatever their political affiliation, to support our campaign in full.
We request from the Minister of the Education, M. Gilles de Robien, to immediately take the necessary measures to enable the creation of bilingual Breton-French teaching jobs.
The Public Service cannot give any reason, not even financial, to justify why children from these schools are still waiting for a teacher giving them their right to a bilingual education, entitled to them by law.
An online petition (voir le site) which was launched last week, has already collected more than 680 names.
As an expression of our good humour, we produced a new licence plate with the Gwen ha du on it. Luck would have it that the letters used are very close to the name of the French Minister of Education.
Our important message remains, however: that we give our whole hearted support to the parents from Bulat-Pestivien et de Languidic (as stated at the bottom of our branded licence plate.)
We encourage the setting up of a new way of expressing ourselves as citizens from January 2008. We therefore invite every internet user to reproduce/copy this licence plate on their websites, with a link that leads to our online petition.
