NEWS FROM THE CELTIC LEAGUE

?Lets be blunt some people do not even have the ability to put food on the table and yet Robertshaw et al are outraged by a caricature of an MHK as a parrot.?

There was an astonishing attack on IOM Newspaper Editor Richard Butt today on Manx Radio because one of the papers published by his group had produced a picture of Zac Hall MHK as a parrot.

Both of the guests and the programme host seemed outraged that such a caricature had been used of the MHK with a nefarious agenda being ascribed to the papers Editor by Chris Roberstshaw.

The story was run as the story of Zac Hall?s plagiarising efforts unfolded and readers of these pages will be aware that I though the whole business of ?bigging up? the fact Hall dipped into someone else?s notes to be a storm in a teacup, however I also though that the parrot caricature was fairly harmless. I could not believe my ears as the ?Mannin Line? trio intoned pompously about it.

Coming as it does so close on the heels of Laurence Skelly?s moral outrage because a taxi driver gave vent to his feelings about the reality of life on the Isle of Man it does indicate a frightening level of intolerance and disconnect in Manx political life.

It also begs the question why these ?sensitive souls? (such as Robertshaw who was one of today?s guests) are not venting their anger over the things that really matter to people on the Island. The issues in the forefront of most peoples mind are how to get by from week to week as the economy slides, stealth charges are imposed and the dreaded sight of the MUA or Manx Gas meter reader comes into view. Lets be blunt some people do not even have the ability to put food on the table and yet Robertshaw et al are outraged by a caricature of an MHK as a parrot.

Personally Richard Butt can do as many front page caricatures as he likes starting next week perhaps with Robertshaw as the village idiot!
