NEWS FROM THE CELTIC LEAGUE

On the 14/15 January 2016 the French National Assembly rejected a proposal put forward by Breton ecologist parliamentarian Paul Molac supporting regional languages. Last year, France refused to ratify the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages. The European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages (ECRML) is a European treaty aimed at protecting and promoting historical regional and minority languages in Europe.

The French establishment have long sought the destruction of the Celtic Breton language of Brittany in their relentless drive for centralisation. The refusal to ratify the (ECRML) and recent rejection of the proposal by Paul Morac are all part of this process to try and eradicate Brittany’s distinctive separate language and culture. Now, as reported in the Breton website (voir le site) some sixty Breton socio-cultural associations are calling for a law on regional languages and cultures. A letter has been sent demanding action with bilingual education and protection of linguistic immersion in schools. Also calling for the protection and promotion of the Breton language by public broadcasters. With the allocation of a prominent space for minority languages and cultures in all media.
