NEWS FROM THE CELTIC LEAGUE I have just learned that as part of budget cuts the Dublin Government is reducing the funding to Údarás na Gaeltachta (The Goverment Agency for the Irish Speaking regions) and also Foras na Gaeilge (The Cross-border body for the promotion of the Irish language). These cuts are occurring at a time where sociolinguists (Dr. Conchúr Ó Giollagáin) have produced a report recently stating that there is less than 10 years left for the Irish language as a community language in the Irish speaking regions. The latest move continues a programme of devastating cuts in language funding that has seen an ongoing reduction in funds since 2008. Obviously as well as being of concern to our Irish branch colleagues this latest move to reduce support for Irish is also an Inter-Celtic concern at the General Secretary of the League will be liaising with Irish branch members ahead of lodging a firm protest to the Office of the Taoiseach.
