NEWS FROM THE CELTIC LEAGUE The Celtic League has written to the Minister for Economic Development asking about the steps taken to monitor conditions for crew members on merchant vessels which are registered in the Isle of Man. The Manx Shipping Registry was the subject of a resolution adopted at the AGM of the Celtic League held in Dublin earlier this year. ?The Minister for Economic Development Mr Laurence Skelly MHK Department of Economic Development St Georges Court Upper Church Street Douglas Isle of Man IM1 1EX 12th July 2015 Dear Minister, I note that on the ?About Us? of the Isle of Man Ship registry pages the statement is made: ?The Isle of Man Ship Registry is not just a register for ships and yachts, it is a centre of excellence, where client focus is paramount? I wonder does this ?excellence? extend to the crew members on the many vessels worldwide registered here and does the Ship Registry maintain a detailed inventory of the terms and conditions enjoyed by crew members? Additionally, what facility does the DED employ to ensure that crew members aggrieved at their treatment can achieve speedy redress? Is their any publicised facility in place to allow crew members employed on Manx registered vessels to complain directly to your Department? Has consideration been given to extending employment protection under current Isle of Man Employment law to all seafarers on Manx registered vessels and if not why? When did the Ship registry last carry out a detailed audit of terms and conditions of crew members or does it let the industry self regulate. Indeed has the Registry ever carried out such an exercise and if not how can the statement be made that the current position is that the Registry is a centre of excellence. Please note none of the above questions relate to relationships your Department or the Industry has with either United Kingdom or other Trade Unions. My questions relate to the steps you, as a Department, physically take to ensure good treatment and standards. I look forward to hearing from you in due course. Yours sincerely Director of Information Celtic League? Link: IOM Ship Registry: (voir le site) J B Moffatt (Mr) Director of Information Celtic League 12/07/15 THE CELTIC LEAGUE INFORMATION SERVICE.
