NEWS FROM THE CELTIC LEAGUE The high profile human rights lawyer Amal Clooney is to be part of a team of lawyers representing the ?Hooded Men? in a case before the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR). The men, all arrested in 1971 in Ulster and interned without trial, were subjected to ill treatment by the British Army. The men?s case was originally brought before the ECHR in 1976 but on that occasion it was finally determined by the Court that the treatment fell short of torture but did constitute ?inhumane and degrading treatment?. However new evidence uncovered by Ireland?s State broadcaster RTE last year led to pressure on the Irish government to reopen the case. The Celtic League were one of a group of organizations that lobbied on behalf of the men (see links) and literally with just hours to go before a deadline for Ireland to submit a fresh case expired the Irish government gave the green light.
