RENDITION FOLLOW UP

The Celtic League has written again to the Irish police about the use of Shannon airport by rendition flights. The move follows an exchange of correspondence last year.

Dear Sir,

Thank you for your letter of the 29th November responding to our query over extraordinary rendition.

The documents referred to in our earlier correspondence were amongst a number recovered by the group HUMAN RIGHTS WATCH (HRW) after the fall of the Libyan regime. I feel sure that HRW organisation will share any intelligence that it has with you.

The aircraft is clearly identified in documents appended to a report compiled by HRW:

I think that there is little doubt now that the aircraft in question was involved in extraordinary rendition. As to whether the aircraft committed illegal acts whilst it transited Irish airspace, or undertook stop-over at Shannon, that surely is a matter which you should now investigate.

I would have thought that given the resources of An Garda Síochána it would be straightforward for you to establish the legitimacy of the `cargo' carried whilst the aircraft was in transit via Ireland. Also, if the aircraft was not carrying anything illegal but was on passage to commit illegal acts surely that in itself would constitute a breach of both domestic and international criminal law.

I do hope that given the new evidence available about the aircraft's activities, the Irish police will now pursue the issue with vigour.

Yours sincerely

J B Moffatt (Mr)
