ILLIAM DHONE COMMEMORATION
The annual Illiam Dhone commemoration has been held today at Hango Hill the site of the Manx martyr's execution.
This year marked the 350th anniversary of Illiam Dhone's death and coincidentally it also marked the 50th anniversary of the formation of Mec Vannin the Manx Nationalist Party.
Bernard Moffatt a founder member of Mec Vannin opened proceedings by speaking about the early days of the Party and the divergent views of those who founded it.
Christopher Lewin and Mark Kermode then delivered orations in Manx and English respectively. The content of both these speeches was hard-hitting and will be published on line shortly ? they were available at the Hill in a special edition of Yn Pabyr Seyr the nationalist paper and for the first time an English translation of the Manx speech was provided.
Numbers at the Hill were slightly lower than in recent years although paradoxically media interest seemed to be higher with radio and TV reporters from various Manx stations present.
