A memorable evening

There were several very pleasant and tuneful events down here in south Finistère over the weekend, as part of the singing fest organised every year by Brigitte Kloareg with her Breton, Irish, Welsh and American friends. On Saturday evening in the beautiful chapel at Sant Jakez, Kloar, nestled in a lush, green park resplendant with frothy white roses, we were regaled with traditional, unaccompanied voices during a 90-minute concert unanimously hailed as one of the highlights of the weekend.

Each singer in turn, some singing in pairs or threes, presented a work, or in some instances two, and said a few words about its origin and history. Several were seasoned performers, well-versed in concert situation and pub singalong alike, but others were newer to the scene.

All were warmly applauded by a delighted house. We were treated to the whole range of emotions, with many happy and humourous numbers and an equal number of sad, historical and reflective ballads. There were also some modern songs and personal compositions to complete the wide range of styles and periods and the audience were invited to join in choruses, which we did with great enthusiasm. Heartfelt thanks to Brigitte and all the singers and organisers who gave us such a memorable evening.
