WALES: HOTEL LANGUAGE BAN PROTEST

The Welsh language organisation Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg has staged a protest at the hotel on Anglesey which is at the centre of a row over the language. A
letter of protest was handed in.

The Chair of Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg, Bethan Williams, said:

Refusing the right of workers to speak Welsh cannot be tolerated and goes totally against basic human rights. We will continue our campaign until the hotel sees sense.

The Deputy First Minister of Wales, Ieuan Wyn Jones, has also added his voice to cocerns and said that the Welsh Language Act that comes into force next year would protect the right to speak Welsh in the workplace. He said:

I am shocked to hear that workers have been sent this letter asking them to refrain from speaking Welsh and I will be asking the hotel to reconsider, he added.

People should have the right to speak Welsh to each other.

The Hotel involved claimed that the decision to proscribe the Welsh language in the kitchen area was taken for `health and safety' reasons and said there has been a `tragic misinterpretation' of the issue.
