MANX FINANCE: LINKS TO TORTURE AND DEATH

It has been revealed that hospital staff treating injured pro-democracy protesters in a country with which the Manx government concluded a tax deal earlier this year are being subjected to a wave of terror.

The Celtic League registered its concern in February after the Isle of Man treasury revealed it had concluded a tax exchange agreement with the dictatorial monarchy of Bahrain.

Just days after Manx government ministers `trumpeted' the deal pro-democracy demonstrators were being gunned down in the streets of the Gulf State and members of the majority Shia community were the target of violence and intimidation.

At the time Treasury Minister Ann Craine told the Celtic League Bahrain was a State with which it is `internationally acceptable' to do business with.

There is nothing `internationally acceptable' about the way medical staff have been treated, however.

Reports say at least 32 doctors, including surgeons, physicians, paediatricians and obstetricians, have been arrested and detained by Bahrain's police in the last month.

One was arrested in the theatre room while operating on a patient and many of those detained have effectively disappeared ? being held incommunicado at undisclosed locations.

The silence from government and media in the Isle of Man and the refusal to revisit and cancel any finanical deals or trade with the despotic State is palpable and indicates how willing many in Mann are to look the other way where the Islands financial services business is concerned.
