A new Branch of the Celtic League has been formally set up in Patagonia and notification of their first meeting has been sent out to the General Secretary (GS) of the League.

The idea to set up a Patagonian branch of the League was first made earlier this year through contact with a long term activist of the League, Jose Calvete. Mr Calvete, who lived in Argentina for a number of years, was contacted by Mónica and Gwynn Jones who announced that they and several other people were looking into establishing a branch in Chubut, Patagonia. After a couple of informal meetings - where the administration of the group had to be agreed - and regular contact with Mr Calvete and the League's GS, the Patagonian group announced last week that they were ready to start work.

Ahead of their first meeting on 24th July 2009, the groups proposed President, Monica Jones, announced that they still had several «important things to define», but to all intents and purposes the «Celtic League was now in Patagonia». The formality of an agreement by the General Council of the Celtic League now has to take place to approve of the new branch and more information will be made available on Celtic League News as soon as it become known.

The League's GS said:

«This is fantastic news! The proposed branch in Patagonia was discussed at the League's General Assembly on 18th July and delegates were very excited about the prospect of a new branch in the territory.

Congratulations will be sent to Monica Jones and the other members of the group as soon as the Branch has been approved by the General Council, which should take place in August. The Secretary of the Welsh Branch of the League has already expressed an interest in working closely with the Patagonian group in the future.»
