The Celtic League have asked the Defence Secretary to explain how potentially dangerous chemical weapons detection kits turned up on a Cornish beach (see below):

«Secretary of State for Defence John Hutton MP Ministry of Defence Main Building Whitehall London SW1A 2HB 15:01:09

Dear Minister,

I understand that a number of containers, believed to be kits used by the military to detect poisonous gasses, and containing sealed bottles of mercury cyanide and sodium hydroxide have been washed up on beaches in Cornwall.

Can you confirm if these kits originate from a MOD source or are part of an MOD disposal?

Could you also advise if these chemical detection kits pose a toxic hazard to members of the public and if so what steps will be taken to discipline those responsible for their negligent loss or disposal?

Yours sincerely

J B Moffatt (Mr)»
