BREIZH/BRITTANY: WE CAN'T FIND YOU - FRENCH POST OFFICE TELL BRETON VILLAGERS

The battle to have street names in the different Celtic languages within the Celtic countries has largely been won - but not in Brittany!

It will come as a shock in the Celtic countries that have fought and won place name battles that a village in Brittany faces the threat of having its Breton street names translated into French.

According to the mayor of the Breton village of Plougerne the Post Office does not understand the street names and they will have to be translated into (in some instances meaningless) French equivalents.

Not surprisingly opposition is growing. Fran May Prigent who is leading the campaign to keep the street names in Breton said that, "The aim is to give the streets new names; It could mean that all the tradition and culture of our fishing village will be lost overnight."
