On Sunday, the young Austrians 16 years old have been allowed to vote at the Parliament elections. It is not a completely new initiative since 2 German Länder have already implemented it, but it is still a very important step. This measure was consensual between all the main Austrian political parties.
The Young Bretons congratulate Austria on this decision which gives more confidence and more room to youth in the political life. In a globally ageing society, it should enable a better intergenerational dialogue.
The French state is currently increasing the duties and the responsibilities of the young people, as it did with the 2007 «Dati» law on second offences; this law deeply questioned the principe of minority plea that divides jail penalties by two for the minors. At the same time, it is never debated on the possibility to improve our rights, especially political rights.
It is necessary to act in order to allow a better cohesion in our society and for the young people's needs to be taken into account. We summon the Breton councils to cut themselves from the state's policy, to express themselves and to act so as to enable as soon as possible a debate with the youth and the possibility to vote from 16 years, at least at the local elections.
For the Young Bretons, the spokesman, Kevin Jezequel
