The Celtic League have written to the Scottish Governments Minister for Communities and Sport, Stewart Maxwell MSP, asking about the position of the SNP on the promotion of Scottish sports and games (see below):

«Dear Stewart Maxwell MSP

Promotion and funding of the sport of Shinty

I am writing to you to enquire what the position of your party is with regard to the promotion and funding of Scottish sports and games, particularly the sport of Shinty.

The Celtic League supports the further promotion and funding of the sport of Shiny, which is today largely played only in the Highlands of Scotland and in big cities by Highland migrants, even though at one time it was more widespread. At our 2007 AGM in Cymru/Wales, the following resolution was passed unanimously:

»This AGM calls on the Scottish Government and political parties to develop specific policy on promoting and funding Shinty.«

We would therefore like to know if your Party would consider developing a specific policy on the promotion and funding of Shinty, to run alongside perhaps the promotion and funding of other Scottish sports/games. If your Party would not consider such a policy(ies) to be appropriate to your political aims, could you please explain why this is the case.

We are surveying all the main political parties in Scotland in order to assess which parties aim to prioritise Scottish sports/games as part of their agenda.

We look forward to receiving your response.

Yours sincerely

Rhisiart Tal-e-bot General Secretary»
